- Human rights campaigner who got things done
by Sidney Jones, The Independent, May 15, 2003
For the last few years, some pundits have been saying that the human-rights movement has lost its way, that, as rights rhetoric has gained currency, the movement itself has lost impact. They should have met Mike Jendrzejczyk. He didn't stay up at night worrying about whether the movement was adrift. He just got things done.

A Quiet Champion
Washington Post, May 4, 2003, Page B06
IN THE CULTURE of federal Washington, no doubt as in all cultures, there is a class of people who accomplish much by seeking little credit. These people bring information to reporters, suggest legislative language to Senate staffers, introduce experts from different fields to promote collaborations. Some do this work for profit, others for principle. One of the latter was Mike Jendrzejczyk, who died unexpectedly Thursday at age 53. He was far more influential than famous, and his death is a setback to the cause of freedom in Asia.

- Excerpt from a statement by Martin Lee, Hong Kong Democratic Party leader:
"Hong Kong has lost our great champion with Mike Jendrzejczk's death.
He was a tireless defender of Hong Kong people and their basic rights --
often when no one else was. Indeed, one of his last battles was to
raise the alarm about the rollback of civil liberties under Article 23.
We will miss him greatly."

The board and staff of Human Rights in China were deeply saddened by the news we received today of Mike Jendrzejczy's death in Washington, D.C. on May 1. As the Washington Director for the Asia division of Human Rights Watch, Mike was a deeply committed, passionate and gifted human rights activist and lobbyist. Mike's untimely death is a great loss to the human rights community. Our thoughts are with his family and his Human Rights Watch colleagues.
