PLEASE NOTE

For more information on the 2008-2009 Kroll Family Human Rights Watch fellowship, click here: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/humanrightsinstitute/fellowships.html#HRW.

Please include all of the following under a single cover. Because of the volume of applications received, it is not possible for us to process incomplete applications.

All materials should be sent on letter or A4 sized loose paper only. Please do not send folders, page covers, etc. Please do not send books, booklets, journals, bound reports, or comb- or spiral-bound documents.

Please note: we cannot return submissions. We will not be able to return to you your transcript, writing sample, or any other part of the application after the Fellowship process is complete. Once you mail these materials to Human Rights Watch, they become the property of Human Rights Watch.

For the NYU Law, Sandler, Finberg Fellowships:

Your application has six parts: your cover letter, resume, writing sample, official transcript, and two letters of recommendation. We require that all materials be sent together, received by October 5, 2007.

Please make sure your name appears on every page of your application, especially the first page of your cover letter.

For the Kroll Family Human Rights Fellowship: Your application has five parts: your statement of interest (1-3 pages), resume, writing sample, official transcript, and contact information for three references. We require that all materials be sent together, received by October 26, 2007.

  • cover letter/statement of interest - A cover letter includes a brief description of how you are suited to the fellowship and why you feel you are an appropriate candidate.
  • résumé (curriculum vitae) - A résumé or curriculum vitae should include your contact information, previous work experience, education, and special skills you have that pertain to the position.
  • two letters of recommendation - A letter of recommendation is a letter written by someone who knows you in a professional or academic capacity testifying to your suitability for a fellowship position. Letters should be sent to you (in a sealed envelope if the writer wishes it to remain confidential) and then forwarded to us with your completed application. Please note that we require two letters of recommendation. In the case of the Kroll Family Human Rights Fellowship we require contact information for three references.
  • unedited, unpublished writing sample - The writing sample can be any document, provided it has been edited only by you. (Thus, you should not submit final, published versions of materials that have been edited by others.) There are no maximum or minimum length requirements; however, writing samples should generally not be longer than 20 pages. Excerpts are perfectly acceptable.
  • The writing sample must be in English. If the sample was translated into English, translation must have been done by the author.

The writing sample may treat any subject, but should reflect your interest in experience in the field of human rights, as well as your writing abilities.

The writing sample should be printed out and stapled only. Please do not send your writing sample on floppy disc or CD. Please do not send books or other bound materials. The Committee will make multiple photocopies of your submission for review; if a writing sample is bound or in color, it will be cumbersome to xerox and may not copy well.

  • official law or graduate school transcript (applicants in one-year graduate programs should supply an undergraduate transcript with a list of their graduate school courses) - Official transcripts are stamped or signed documents from your university telling us what grades/marks and degrees you earned. Please do not send diplomas or degree certificates, as these do not tell us what grades or marks you received in your classes. Please do not send a photocopy of a transcript or of your diploma. You should have your official transcript forwarded to you by your college or university, and then forwarded to us with your completed application. Please note that if transcripts of your graduate work are not yet available, you must send an official transcript of your undergraduate work and an official letter from your graduate program confirming your enrollment. We regret that transcripts cannot be returned to you after the selection process.
