What You Can Do
Urge Congress to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to protect all working children equally. Specifically, Congress should act to: prohibit child labor in agriculture before age 14; limit the number of hours that children aged 14 and 15 can legally work in agriculture; and raise the minimum age for hazardous agricultural work to eighteen. Congress should also address the educational and vocational needs of farmworkers, particularly those of farmworker youth who have dropped out of school. Click here for a sample letter. Letters are especially urged to members of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions:
2. Write to the U.S. Secretary of Labor. Urge the Department of Labor to dramatically increase inspections targeting child labor violations in agriculture. Also urge the Department to stop the shipment of goods produced in violation of child labor or minimum age laws.
