Benefits and Responsibilities of Council Members
The Human Rights Watch Chicago Committee is part of a network of committees in North America and Europe, composed of opinion leaders from a variety of backgrounds. The committees constitute an informed an engaged constituency that is essential for the defense of human rights. They seek to increase awareness of local and global human rights issues and enlist the public and governments to support basic rights for all. Committee members meet regularly to learn about human rights crises and policies and support the work of Human Rights Watch.
Membership in the Human Rights Watch Council provides an inside perspective on our organization, which is known around the world for its in –depth research, targeted recommendations, and effective advocacy. Committee members have access to regular briefings by Human Rights Watch researchers, senior government officials, and regional experts. These sessions address current human rights crises as well as more persistent abuses.
Council members have the opportunity to advance the efforts of Human Rights Watch substantively through outreach and advocacy initiatives, and financially through personal contributions and solicitations. All members will be invited to participate in or receive the following:
Chicago Committee Membership Benefits:
- An annual meeting with the Executive Director who will review the organization’s current strategy and brief Council members on Human Rights Watch’s most important work
- Regular events with leading human rights activists, policy makers, diplomats, and select dignitaries who are actively involved in the human rights cause
- Meetings with senior members of the Human Rights Watch program staff
- Access to an International network of Council members across the United States, Canada, and Europe
- The opportunity to support and participate in Human Rights Watch special events, locally, nationally, and internationally
- A quarterly update on the work of Human Rights Watch from the Executive Director, and a semi-annual newsletter
- A subscription to the Council Book Review, which highlights new books addressing human rights themes around the world
- A complimentary copy of Human Rights Watch’s World Report and other Human Rights Watch publications according to regional/thematic area of interest
- Recognition in annual report and event programs
Council members strengthen Human Rights Watch and its global defense of essential rights by contributing financially, attracting potential supporters, and participating in the organization’s advocacy campaigns. Council members participate in initiatives around Fundraising, Outreach, and Advocacy. In coordination with other committee members and Human Rights Watch staff, members are expected to develop and participate in the following:
Chicago Committee Membership responsibilities:
- Serving as an ambassador and advocate in the promotion of Human Rights Watch in the Chicago community
- Cultivating new members for the Human Rights Watch Chicago Committee
- Contributing and/or raising a minimum of $3000 annually on behalf of the Human Rights Watch Chicago Committee either directly or through in-kind donations
- Attending a minimum of two committee meetings annually
- Hosting, Co-hosting, and/or participating in attendance recruitment and sales for Chicago Committee events
- Providing linkages and targeting specific audiences for outreach opportunities
- Participating in sub-committees where skills and interests apply
- Lending your name to the committee for private and public listings and for targeted action campaigns.
