The 2024 parliamentary elections were marred by a rise in racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory rhetoric, alongside extreme political polarization. Despite this, civil society mobilized to champion tolerance and nondiscrimination, with a majority of voters rejecting far-right governance. Inflation disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable, putting their enjoyment of basic economic and social rights at risk. Asylum seekers and migrants often face inhumane living conditions and are subject to police abuse. Unaccompanied migrant children are often denied essential services and protections. Racist violence and discrimination, including discriminatory police stops of minority youth, are common. Civil society faces state interference including from a controversial law against “separatism.” While reproductive rights have significantly advanced, deaths of women due to domestic violence have increased.
