Burundi: Alleged Coup Plotters Tortured

(New York, August 4, 2006) – The government of Burundi must ensure that individuals who were arrested this week in connection with an alleged coup plot are not tortured by agents of the National Information Service, Human Rights Watch said today.

Several local and international organizations, including Human Rights Watch, jointly issued a declaration condemning the beatings of individuals during interrogations and calling on the government to open investigations and bring those responsible for torture to justice.
