Internship Description:
The Development and Outreach Department of HRW is seeking an intern to assist department staff with general departmental responsibilities including, but not limited to, writing acknowledgment letters and other correspondence; updating and maintaining department databases and files; and supporting the organization’s community of volunteers, advocates and major donors. The intern will help staff execute special events and other outreach initiatives.

This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience within a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge of fundraising, event management and information tracking, as well as knowledge of the organization’s priority human rights issues. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and will have the opportunity to take advantage of selected in-house trainings and briefings.

Undergraduate internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the student's interests and abilities, including research, drafting documents, and translating.

Internships are generally unpaid, although work-study funds are available. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Internet research skills, knowledge of HTML and/or Macromedia Dreamweaver, and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are a must. Data entry experience and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or other databases are desirable. Relevant coursework is highly desirable, and knowledge of foreign languages is a plus. Candidates should have a strong interest in human rights.

How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief, unedited writing sample (no calls or email inquiries, please) to tara.golden@hrw.org. Please use “Development and Outreach Internship Application” as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email.
