London Office
3 days per week from January 2008

Apply Immediately

Internship Description:
The Development and Outreach Department in the London office is seeking an intern to provide special event assistance in connection with our Human Rights Watch International Film Festival and Benefit Gala in March 2008 and other departmental activities. Responsibilities associated with events include, but are not limited to, assisting staff with event logistics; site visits; procurement support including supplier research and sourcing; aiding the coordination of printed materials; writing acknowledgement letters and other correspondence; updating and maintaining files; assisting with general research and contacting supporters and other administrative tasks including filing, couriers and minutes. The intern may also liaise with the London Committee’s relevant sub-groups as required. The intern will report to the Events Manager, Europe.

Internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the individual’s interests, skills and abilities.

This internship is unpaid. Daily travel (within London) and lunch costs will be covered as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organisation, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organisations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications:
This internship would be especially suited for individuals interested in special events, fundraising, and outreach within a human rights context. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, reliable, and flexible and ideally have an interest in international human rights. First-rate time-management skills and the ability to work well under pressure are essential. Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel) are required. Attention to detail, a professional telephone manner, fluency in English and solid writing skills are necessary. Experience in an administrative role is desirable, as is previous events or fundraising- related experience. Both students and non-students are welcome to apply.

How to Apply:
Please apply by sending a letter of interest, C.V, two names or letters of reference and a brief, unedited writing sample (500 words or less) to Nancy Holden at nancy.holden@hrw.org. Please use ‘Events Internship’ as the heading for your email.
