Funded Graduate Internships

I.F. Stone Fellowships: The I.F. Stone Fellowships are available to students at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. There are three internships available (either summer for 8-10 weeks, or winter intersession for 6-8 weeks), each with a modest stipend. Nominations are made by the Journalism School with final selection by Human Rights Watch. For more information and application deadlines, interested students should contact Rob Gunnison directly at gunnison@berkeley.edu. (The I.F. Stone Internships are funded through a gift to HRW by Berkeley alumnus Steven Silberstein, a retired businessman whose company pioneered software systems for large international libraries, and a major donor to the Graduate School of Journalism at Berkeley.)

Klatsky Summer Fellowships: Klatsky Fellowships are available to students at the School of Law at Case Western Reserve University. There are two summer internships of 8-10 weeks, generally at HRW's New York or Washington, DC offices, with a modest stipend. Nominations are made by Case Western with final selection by Human Rights Watch. For more information and application deadlines, interested students should contact Dean Gerry Korngold directly at (216) 368-3283. (The Klatsky Fellowships are funded through a gift to Case Western Reserve University by HRW board member Bruce Klatsky.)

McGill Human Rights Summer Internship: The McGill summer internship is available to students at McGill University's Faculty of Law in Montreal through its International Human Rights Internship Programme. One student is selected by the school for placement within Human Rights Watch for a 12-week period between May 1 and August 31st. The student is eligible to earn six credits towards completion of the law degree and will be graded on the basis of an internship report and an independent research project. The Programme provides return economy airfare and a modest stipend.  For more information and application deadlines, interested students should contact Professor René Provost, Chair of the Programme, at rene.provost@mail.mcgill.ca, or the Programme's student coordinator, Ian Philp, at ian.philp@mail.mcgill.ca

Everett Public Service Summer Internship Program: Each year, the Everett Public Service Internship Program places six summer interns in the offices of Human Rights Watch - typically, four in New York, NY and two in Washington, DC. In addition to the regularly-held Human Rights Watch staff meetings and special events, the Everett Program offers bi-weekly guest lectures and events. Internships last for approximately 10 weeks with a modest stipend to offset expenses. Applicants must be current students at (or immediate graduates of) U.S. colleges or graduate schools, with a minimum of two semesters completed, possess valid work authorization within the United States, and must be able to attend all scheduled Everett program events.
The deadline for applying to this competitive program is Friday, March 14, 2008. Everett internships will be awarded by April 11, 2008. Please apply by emailing in a single submission: a cover letter, resume, contact information for two references and a brief, unedited writing sample to humanresources@hrw.org. Please use "Everett Public Service Internship Application" as the subject of your email. The writing sample should be an academic essay no longer than five pages. You must specify only ONE division and the associated office with which you wish to intern in the cover letter. Only complete applications will be reviewed.

The divisions that may be applied to are as follows:

New York Office: Advocacy, Africa, the Americas (does not include the U.S.), Arms, Asia, Communications & Press, Children's Rights, Development and Outreach, Europe & Central Asia, Emergencies, Finance & Administration, Human Resources, HIV/AIDS, International Justice, International Film Festival, Legal & Policy, LGBT Rights, Middle East & North Africa, Terrorism/Counterterrorism, and the United States.

Washington D.C. Office: Advocacy, Africa, the Americas (does not include the U.S.), Arms, Asia, Business and HR, Middle East and North Africa, Refugee Policy, Terrorism/Counterterrorism, and United States.

If emailing is not possible, send materials (please do not split a submission between email and regular post) to:

Fordham Law School Externship Program: Each semester, the Fordham Law School Externship Program places two law students in the New York office of HRW. Externships last 10 weeks for about 14 to 16 hours per week and pay a stipend of approximately $2,000. This externship opportunity is available to current Fordham Law School students through the Crowley International Human Rights Program. For more information and application deadlines, interested students should contact Jeanmarie Fenrich, Executive Director, The Crowley Program in International Human Rights, Fordham Law School, directly at jfenrich@law.fordham.edu or (212) 636-7533.

Roland Algrant Summer Internship: The Roland Algrant Internship is a 10-week summer placement for one full-time research intern with HRW's Children's Rights Division ("CRD") to be based in the Brussels office. The Algrant Intern will focus on substantive research relating to migrant and asylum-seeking children in Greece. The Algrant Intern will be directly supervised by a researcher in the Children's Rights Division and will be responsible for researching, writing, and editing discrete assigned topics, as decided in consultation with the CRD. This internship pays a stipend of US$4,500 for 10 weeks. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by staff, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements. This internship is open to law students, law graduates, and graduate students with knowledge of international human rights law, refugee law, children's rights, public policy or other relevant fields of study. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights issues. Strong writing skills in English as well as written and oral flueny in Greek are essential. Relevant coursework is highly desirable, and knowledge of one or more additional languages is a plus. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required. Please apply by emailing a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief, unedited writing sample to the CRD Associate at crd@hrw.org. Please use "Roland Algrant Summer Internship 2008" as the subject of your email. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2008. Only complete applications will be reviewed. (The CRD was able to establish the Roland Algrant Summer Internship due to a generous endowment from friends of Roland Algrant.)
