Washington Advocacy Deputy Director.

- Conducting advocacy with officials in the executive branch, including the State Department and National Security Council, and with members of Congress and their staffs;
- Leading HRW’s advocacy in Washington on selected issues, as defined in consultation with the Washington Advocacy Director;
- Partnering with HRW divisions and researchers to identify and create opportunities that support their advocacy efforts involving the US government, and engaging in sustained follow-up on such initiatives;
- Conducting research on US foreign policy issues and drafting position papers, letters, and background memoranda;
- Monitoring US foreign policy relating to human rights within both the executive and legislative branches of government, and informing and advising HRW staff on developments;
- Supporting HRW’s efforts to engage the Washington press corps regarding our work;
- Working with non-governmental organizations and representing HRW in various NGO settings and coalitions in which HRW participates;
- Assisting with the supervision of advocacy interns working in HRW’s Washington office; and
- Other tasks as may be assigned.
Qualifications: Applicants should have at least 5 to 7 years of international advocacy experience. Candidates should also have substantial knowledge of the executive and legislative branches of the US government, and direct experience working within or with the US government is strongly desired. Candidates must have significant human rights experience and expertise and a demonstrated commitment to human rights. In addition, the successful applicant must be an effective public speaker and possess excellent speaking, writing, and editing skills in English. Fluency in one or more languages in addition to English would be an asset. The ideal candidate will have good judgment and excellent analytical and strategic-thinking capabilities; the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure; the capacity to pay close attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple tasks; strong coordination skills; and the ability to work effectively independently, as part of a team, and in partnership with other organizations.
