Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of  
Washington Advocacy Deputy Director.

Description: The Washington Advocacy Deputy Director is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of advocacy strategies on the full range of countries and issues addressed by Human Rights Watch. The Deputy Director is directly involved in the management and coordination of advocacy activities conducted by HRW in Washington. The responsibilities of the Deputy Director include, but are not limited to: The Washington Advocacy Deputy Director is a member of HRW’s Advocacy Department, led by the Global Advocacy Director, and is supervised by the Washington Advocacy Director. The Deputy Director is based in Washington, DC.  
 
Qualifications: Applicants should have at least 5 to 7 years of international advocacy experience. Candidates should also have substantial knowledge of the executive and legislative branches of the US government, and direct experience working within or with the US government is strongly desired. Candidates must have significant human rights experience and expertise and a demonstrated commitment to human rights. In addition, the successful applicant must be an effective public speaker and possess excellent speaking, writing, and editing skills in English. Fluency in one or more languages in addition to English would be an asset. The ideal candidate will have good judgment and excellent analytical and strategic-thinking capabilities; the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure; the capacity to pay close attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple tasks; strong coordination skills; and the ability to work effectively independently, as part of a team, and in partnership with other organizations.
