About the Paris office
Founded in 1978, Human Rights Watch is one of the world's major human rights organizations. We investigate human rights violations, publish the results of our research, and undertake advocacy campaigns in order to put an end to the abuses we have identified. We seek to enlist the aid of political authorities, the media as well as the general public in confronting the perpetrators of human rights violations and promoting effective rights protection.
Through its Paris office, Human Rights Watch will encourage France to pursue an increasingly active policy in the defense of human rights, and thereby assume a leadership role in Europe and internationally in this area.
The Paris office is led by Jean-Marie Fardeau, who has held leadership positions in the nonprofit sector for 20 years; he was formerly the Executive Secretary of the Catholic Committee against Hunger and for Development (CCFD).
The office consists of two Departments:
- • An Advocacy and Media Relations Department (Département Plaidoyer et Communication média en faveur des droits humains), which aims to inform French government authorities as well as the media on various human rights violations, and to make specific recommendations on the best ways to respond to such abuses in order to help put an end to them.
- • A Development Department (Département Développement), which works closely with the Paris Committee in organizing events designed to enhance Human Rights Watc's visibility in France. This Department seeks to increase the general public's awareness of human rights violations throughout the world, and to raise funds used in combating such violations.
The Paris office will work closely with Human Rights Watch's other European offices in Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, London and Moscow. Human Rights Watch's North American offices are located in New York (where the organization is headquartered), Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington. Human Rights Watch researchers work in numerous other cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To find out more about our work throughout the world, please visit the Human Rights Watch main website.
