Office Interns - Development & Outreach Department and US Program
Summer 2008

Apply Immediately

Internship Description:
Human Rights Watch’s San Francisco office, which focuses primarily on fundraising and outreach, is seeking summer interns. Intern responsibilities include but are not limited to, helping staff execute special events and other outreach initiatives, including the 2008 Voices for Justice Dinner; writing correspondence; updating and maintaining department databases and files; and supporting the organization's community of volunteers and donors. Ideally, the selected candidate would begin in May and continue through August 2008 or longer.

This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge of fundraising, event management and information tracking, as well as knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues.

Internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the student's interests and abilities, including research, drafting documents, translating, and helping researchers prepare for missions.

Internships are unpaid, however students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights. A minimum commitment of 10-15 hours per week, three days per week and occasional night events is required. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required. Graphic and web design experience is a plus as is event planning and organizing experience.

How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief, unedited writing sample (no calls or email inquiries, please) to albertl@hrw.org. Please use “Office Internship” as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email.
