Internships

Thank you for your interest in an internship position with the San Francisco office of Human Rights Watch. Please keep in mind that the San Francisco office is primarily a fundraising and public outreach office that does limited advocacy or research work. If you are looking to work on a specific issue or region of the world, you may want to consider contacting the New York office.

What does a SF internship entail?
Interns are generally responsible for supporting and guiding special projects in the areas of education, outreach, and development for the San Francisco office of Human Rights Watch. Interns will become familiar with the focus of various programs and participate, when possible, in special events. Examples of past SF intern projects include: researching local universities for our outreach programs, researching and setting up a database of local organizations for partnering with our events, assisting with event organization such as venue location, partnering contacts, invitations and helping with on-site coordination. Some on-site help is needed with the film festival in the spring. Some interns have initiated their own outreach projects with films and speakers.

Is the internship paid? Who can apply?
The SF office provides an unpaid internship program for undergraduate students, graduate students and other volunteers year-round. Human Rights Watch does not provide assistance with visas, passports or any documents. Interns are responsible for their own transportation, housing, meals, and living expenses. The internship is not paid and does not include a stipend.

What is the time commitment?
Each intern is required to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week, for 3 months. Depending on our needs, we may encourage interns to stay with us longer.

What are the qualifications?
Candidates must be self-motivated, well-organized, collegial and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. The candidate must have strong computer skills - familiarity with Excel, Microsoft Word and the Internet. Any event planning and organizing background is appreciated. Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail are required.

What is the application procedure?
Please send a brief cover letter and resume to the address specified below. Please indicate months of availability as well as any specific human rights interests.

How should I send my application materials?
Please email your application materials to albertl@hrw.org with "Internship Application" in the subject line.
