In a Time of Torture: The Assault on Justice In Egypt's Crackdown on Homosexual Conduct

In May, 2001, dozens of men were rounded up in Cairo, tortured by police, and eventually charged with homosexual conduct--the "habitual practice of debauchery"--and with forming an illegal religious cult. The state press turned their trial (which took place before a special Emergency State Security Court) into a media frenzy. This footage shows scenes from the final hearing in the trial--at which 23 of the men were convicted, with sentences ranging from one to five years in prison. (For more information on the trial, see chapter 3 of In a Time of Torture.)

Only journalists were allowed in the courtroom for the final hearing, which Egyptian authorities evidently hoped to use to advertise their justice system. Family members and even attorneys were shut outside, to pound on the locked doors.

The judge deliberately reads his verdicts in a near-whisper, while prisoners in the cage beg more and more desperately to be allowed to hear their own sentences--and relatives and lawyers outside shout to be allowed in the courtroom. As the judge exits, anguished prisoners plead with reporters to tell them whether they have been found guilty.
