In February 2019, teachers at Kongoussi Provincial High School, in Burkina Faso’s Centre-Nord region, found a typed note in French affixed at the school. The threatening, mostly rambling note states in part: “I am the jihadist leader El-Djibril Sy. I am giving you a short 72-hour deadline to teach Arabic in this establishment... or to stop classes completely[;] if not you already know the result.”
