ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This report was written by a consultant to Human Rights Watch based on research carried out in Côte d'Ivoire in October 2002, and subsequent telephone interviews; with contributions from Maxine Marcus, consultant in the Human Rights Watch office in Sierra Leone, who also participated in the research. It was edited by Bronwen Manby, deputy director of the Africa division, and by Ian Gorvin, consultant to the program office; and was also reviewed by James Ross, senior legal adviser. Production and coordination assistance was provided by Jeff Scott, associate in the Africa Division, Patrick Minges, Publications Director, and Fitzroy Hepkins, Mail Manager.

Human Rights Watch would like to thank all who spoke to us in Côte d'Ivoire, especially the victims of the abuses we describe. We also pay tribute to the courage of Ivorian human rights defenders who are continuing their work under conditions of great danger and difficulty. Human Rights Watch acknowledges with thanks funding from Stichting Doen for this report.
