Human Rights Watch Statement on Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned Iranian human rights advocate, for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

The following quote can be attributed to Tirana Hassan, executive director at Human Rights Watch:

“For more than two decades, Narges Mohammadi has been a crucial member of Iranian civil society, organizing under intense repression to promote human rights and equality, and accountability for serious violations.

By awarding Mohammadi the Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee is recognizing her immense contributions, selfless sacrifices, and the courage and resilience that she and other Iranian human rights activists demonstrate daily in their fight for a brighter, rights-respecting Iran.

Iranian authorities should immediately and unconditionally release Mohammadi and other imprisoned human rights activists.”
