Across the US, local police work together with federal immigration agents, which means unauthorized immigrants are afraid to call the police – even if they’re the victim of a violent crime. This partnership makes entire neighborhoods less safe and criminals more likely to go free.  

More than one hundred civil society groups have today urged the UN Security Council to approve a resolution to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC). In a statement, the coalition of NGOs says that no one on any side in  Syria's conflict has been held to account for rights abuses. The proposed resolution would give the ICC jurisdiction over crimes against humanity and war crimes

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières said that five of its staff who were abducted in Syria this past January were released. 

Thousands of Ukrainian steel workers in the city of Mariupol took matters into their own hands by spreading out through the streets and wresting control from pro-Moscow groups. Tensions continued in other eastern Ukrainian cities. 

Not only have three Al-Jazeera journalists been jailed in Egypt for doing their job, they have been told that they must pay $170,000 to see the video that is the basis of their case against them, which alleges that the journalists planned to spread false news about unrest in Egypt. 

Turkish trade unions went on strike today to protest the death of at least 282 miners in Soma. Police fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands of protesters in Izmir. Turkish security forces have a shaky relationship with protesters. One year ago, officers cracked down hard on Gezi Park demonstrators, injuring scores of non-violent protesters. 

Last year Spain passed a law in response to the mortgage crisis, to postpone evictions, provide affordable housing, alleviate mortgage debt, and ensure effective court remedies. But the law is too limited scope and results have not met the need for redress.
