Angola’s political and civil rights environment has become less restrictive over the past year, and the courts appeared to operate without political interference. Security forces have been implicated in extrajudicial killings, and frequently use intimidation, excessive force, and arbitrary detention. President João Lourenço’s anti-corruption campaign resulted in the arrest of several former government and ruling party officials.
